Professor David Gomez-Barquero, Project Manager of 5G-Xcast, gave a lecture on Broadcast and Multicast Communications Enablers for 5G at the University of Cagliari (Italy). The lecture was organized by the Italian Chapter of the IEEE Broadcast Technology Society (BTS) as part of the IEEE BTS Distinguished Lecturer program.
In his lecture, Prof. Gomez-Barquero presented an overview of the key technical features of 5G and the main differences with respect to 4G LTE, and highlighted some of the foreseen use cases and applications that might be enabled by 5G for different vertical industries. He then explained the current status of 5G standardization in 3GPP as well the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) IMT-2020 (International Mobile Telecommunication) performance evaluation process. In the second part of the lecture, he reviewed use cases for point-to-multipoint (PTM) transmissions in 5G, including terrestrial broadcast, and presented the main technical challenges to design PTM communication enablers in the 5G radio access and core networks as built-in delivery optimization features. The lecture concluded with the presentation of the key achievements of the 5G-Xcast project.
